A Useless Wooden Push Toy.

Been chatting with a buddy at the current 9-5 about some of the various projects that I have built and crafted together over the years and kinda got stoked to go play with an old idea that was kicked around for a while way back in 2006. So I am dusting off the 'ol paint brushes, oiling the rusted joints and giving it a go to try and bring some life back into this forgotten project. I am going about it with no expectations or a road map. Just going to start wandering with it and see where it might take us.
Starting out on this adventure I figured might as well mess with this here unused skate deck.

First thing first, need to rid it of it's original art and start fresh.

After a little elbow grease...

time for a pass with a new coat of paint.

Yeah some of the images I shot 'em with the phone in poor light cause I was too lazy to get out the nikon....
Anyway, next up will be laying down some ruff outlines and giving it new life.
More on that as it progresses...

It has been a very long time since I have spent any time on this magic intro-net thing that I almost forgot how to use it... OK not really, but I have been super spent doing other things to keep food on the table and the 'lil groms happy that it has taken me away from the beloved electronic information finder. A year ago I had the awesome opportunity to meet Mr. Cabourn while living and working in the Great Pacific Northwest at EB. In November of this year we see the outcome of the first colaberation with Nigel Cabourn & Eddie Bauer, the best stuff coming out of EB in a very, very long time. Mr. Cabourn was given the liberty to re-interpret 3 EB original down styles.

48 matches in a little over six weeks and early this morning at around 3am Pacific Standard Time here in SoCal the boys in black of New Zealand walk away winners of the 2011 Rugby World Cup!
It was a close match against a French team who gave it there all, in fact it was the lowest scoring and tightest contest world cup final to date. NZ 8 FR 7.

Four more years till the next RWC and it will be in the country that started it all, England 2015.
Well now that is all said and done guess it is time to get back to making things....

About a year and a half ago or so I put needle and thread to fabric and built a wallet/ card holder for myself out of some heavy weight chambray. I was looking it over the other day and noticed it aging nicely and wanted to share a few images.

She has been good but I have a few ideas brewing that might be a good update...

Cover That Point.

As we have slowly settled into our current abode it has take'n me ages to get the shop space set up. I recently cleared a few more boxes and have set up the ol industrial. Late last night on a whim I decided that I need to have a cover for my scisors in my kit bag.
Busted out a ruff pattern.

Fired up 'MsGreen' and proceeded to build a leather cover for them scissors.

It feels good to build something from idea to finished product all in one go.
So often than not an idea is sketched out. A pattern or two built. Construction begins and then things get left in various state of completion as life steps in and does it's thing. Not this project.

Also stoked to finally have a little work space built out to help get some of those silly ideas out and into projects....

Countdown RWC 2011: Starts today!!!

So if the past few days of images of Rugby's past got you a little stoked to check out what is going on today then I suggest you find a way to tune in and begin cheering on your country or favorite teams in this the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Since today it all begins I figured I would save the best for last, as in where it all started, this game played in Heaven, Rugby School in Rugby England.

Growing up on a skateboard & snowboard in the "salty city" was great fun filled with adventure, creativity, and the occasional unwanted torment from jocks and cowboys (usually one in the same) The unwritten rule at the time was to never mix any interests of team sports with your passion or time diversion of skateboarding. How did my "friend" put it when I wanted to have a go at trying out for the Grid Iron HS team, "yeah that would be cool, the football team caption riding a skateboard" followed by much laughter.... Funny how times change, now the jocks look like the skateboarders or is it the hessians or is it the hipster cool guy or is it.... I must be old cause the kids all look the same to me.
Anyway I digress. Long story short. I still struggle with liking team sports as if it still feels like I am doing something wrong (oh HS)
Ah no more my friend. Enter the wonderful world of RUGBY. The game of Gentilmen. "The Game Played in Heaven." American Football, or Grid Iron, would not exist without this game. It is steeped in a great history filled with various rivalries. New Zealand and Australia. England and Wales, etc. But at the end of each match both sides join together, winner with Looser, and raise a glass to an 80 minute non-stop diversion of blood, sweat and cheers!
In exactly 18 days from the time I am writing this the 2nd most watched sporting event in the world (Football(soccer) world cup is still the most watched) begins in Aotearoa, land of the Long White Cloud, New Zealand. A place where Rugby is more than a sport but a passion. The Rugby World Cup. Since I like the game and I am very excited about the coming events I plan to do an image a day from Rugby: the Golden Age. (yes another book) till opening ceremonies. Starting off here with a total action shot to get you hooked.

Inspo From Books.

Sometimes I wonder if I am just a strange bloke, as I love books. Nothing strange about that, I know, but I love to read non fiction books. Fiction just dose not do it for me. But if I really want to settled down for a good read I like to turn to a good biography. Stories of real folks doing what they do. Overcoming adversity. Making do with what is given them, or just the story of how they got to where they are today. In some cases what they did with the life they were given here on earth... I just like learning about how people do things. One such part of that interest is, being that I find myself feeding my family thru employment in the Apparel and Design field, that of Designers sketch books and or Pin boards (aka:mood boards, season boards or just, inspiration boards).
A while back I picked up one such book at a roadside stand along the information highway, Fashion Designers Sketchbook by Hywel Davies
There are a lot of really great Designers found within the pages of said book such as Aitor Throup and Margaret Howell. One that recently jumped out at me upon a revisit from the book shelf was that of Frank Leder.
So now I share with you these wonderful pages. Enjoy.

People You Should Know: Denim Geek

If you have noticed I have not been doing much posting as of late as I have been up to my neck in way to much goings on, from trying to get a new brand off the ground for the 9-5 to family travels and summertime adventures. Well, I have said it before, and will more than likely say it again; this intro-net thing is pretty darn neat. Anything and everything is right at your fingertips … and instantly. But more than that is the amazing opportunity to connect with like-minded folks that are oceans way from where you currently call home… I Recently had the opportunity take advantage of such wonders and sit down with the ‘ol wi-fi and spend a few moments over a couple of days doing a little back and forth via the Email and have a chat with the fine folks that run the show over at denimgeek.com, Andrew & Liam…. What? You are not aware of Denim Geek?.... Oh you already are a fan of their blog and shop but want to know more about the minds that power this thing, well aether way you’re in luck. Who are you and what do you do?

Andrew : Liam Winn and Andrew Booth, we both run the blog and store at Denim Geek.

Where did you grow up?

Liam : We are both from Sunderland, in the North East of England.

When did you start "Geeking" out on apparel and Denim? Or better yet, why?

A: I’ve worked in fashion since 2000 so through the years my interest and curiosity has evolved with the trends. With such easy access I’ve always ended up spending most of my wages on clothes.
L: I’ve always had a keen interest in all forms of design including fashion. I tend to like things that have a back story and enjoy understanding how things are made, so heritage denim brands are perfect.

What is it about denim that you love so much?

A: Denim has always appealed to me, because unlike any other item of clothing they actually get better with age and wear.

L: I guess I fell in love the moment I bought my first pair of raw denim. The build quality, handle and atheistic all blew me away. The individual aspect also appeals to me; two pairs of the same jeans owned by two people can look completely different after a few months of wear.

Who is your favourite brand?

Andrew: For me, Edwin is a brand I have always went back to and more recently Naked & Famous, as I find their innovative approach very refreshing.

L: If I made a list it would probably include a mix of both Japanese and European brands. From past experience I’d go for Dry Bones, 3sixteen & A.P.C.

Any new brand, or brands that you are really excited about?

L: We’re always keeping an eye on magazines and blogs, trying to discover new brands. The Unbranded Brand is a fairly young one that was introduced to us by the guys from Naked & Famous and they seem to have hit on a great concept with it.

How many pairs of Denim do you own personally?

A: I think I own about 18 pairs, not all of them fit of course and some of them are well on their last legs, I just simply can’t bring myself to throw them away!

L: I’ve got far too many to list but I’m the same as Andrew in the way that I never want to throw them out. There are probably around 40 pairs in my wardrobe including rare collaborations and standard 501s.

Do you rotate your denim or wear the same pair for a long time?

A: I’m currently alternating between 3 or 4 pairs including pair of A.P.C New Cure, Edwin ED-71, Levi’s 201s and Flat Head Frontiers...... the expansion my waistband dictates which pair I get to work on and how long I get to wear them in!

L: I’m currently wearing in my latest pair of Edwin ED-47s. I’ve had a few over the last few years and love the fit. My new pair of 3sixteen SL-100x will be the next project.

What is it sparked a desire for you to start a blog and how long have you been blogging?

L: It really began as a hobby in early 2009. I wanted to share some experiences and know-how about things such as washing and care and it quickly seemed a popular read for quite a few people. Andrew came on board in early 2010 to help me out and the rest is history.

How important is the internet and social media to you?

L: Without the internet we wouldn’t have had the chance to start a store. It gives smaller companies like ourselves the chance to share their products with a much bigger audience and start up costs are minimal. With the introduction of social networking, the whole idea of the world being more ‘open’ means that people can quickly share thoughts and ideas in a more visual and social way.

How did the shop come about?

A: The store came about after a few little chats and it was always a possibility for us. If we could write about and discuss the products we love, why couldn’t we offer them for sale to other denim heads? We like the fact that we are a small operation and we can deal with our customers on a personal level.

In your little description found on the bottom of your home page for the shop it says "All of our brands focus on quality over quantity and are specialists in both craftsmanship and production. No product is added to the inventory unless it meets our criteria." What is an example of those criteria?

L: The store is based around a heritage/workwear aesthetic, true to the roots of denim and we’re trying and carry brands that have a history to them. The quality of a lot of the products speaks for itself and we still discuss construction and production techniques on the blog. A lot of our customers want jeans that look great and fit well but are also hardwearing and sturdily constructed.

Do you approach brands specifically to carry their product or do they find you?

A: To start with we had a small list of brands in mind and got in touch with them directly. Feedback on the idea was great and people were really interested in working with us. It’s starting to turn round a little now and brands are approaching us with enquiries.

What is it that you look for in new product? Or what gets you really excited about select items?

A: First and foremost something has to catch our eye, it goes without saying aesthetics and the overall look is very important, as is the quality of the denim itself. This aside we look for a blend of respected and established brands that have stood the test of time mixed with newcomers whom we feel have bags of potential.

How relevant do you think the craft of handmade or small production runs are?

L: For as long as I’ve been into denim I’ve tried to keep up with a few individuals with a passion for quality goods. Corter Leather was always a handmade brand that I wanted to add to the store. I first heard about Eric on Superfuture around 2 years ago and was so impressed with his work. A lot more people are interested in his pieces now and that’s great.

Top five daily blog checks?

A: We visit the larger blogs on a daily basis such as Hypebeast and Selectism but like looking through more personal blogs as well. You can find a lot of honest opinions and content on them which is invaluable. Favorites include Linage of Influence, Individualism and Another Something.

Top five books that are worth the read?

1. ‘The Game’ by Neil Strauss
2. ‘The Facebook Effect’ by David Kirkpatrick
3. ‘Born to Run’ by Christopher McDougall
4. ‘Cosa Nostra’ by John Dickie
5. ‘The Damned United’ by David Pearce

Two things you could not live without?

L: For me it’s me iPhone. My girlfriend goes crazy, as I never put it down.

A: I’d be eternally bored without my sketchpad, scanner and Adobe Photoshop.

What is coming down the pipe for the folks at Denim Geek that we should be looking forward to?

L: We’re busy looking into more brands for the next few seasons and want to expand the product range into other clothing such as outerwear and shirting. There has been quite a bit of demand for wardrobe staples such as Ralph Lauren and Fred Perry, but we’re planning to add a few more hard to find/niche brands to the mix as well. We want to try and cater for as many people as possible.

Now that the 'ol work bench is built and I have a place to start making messes again I decided to have a go with some more wood work. This time making some signage. Now this is a long post because I took heaps of images through out all of the steps of the build. From paper pattern cutting...

...all the way to being hung in the office at the 9-5er.
This is also my first go at shooting everything with my phone camera. Not the best images but good enough to share the building process.

So started out with the idea a while back and finally got around to going after it by finding a good font that I liked. Printing out nice and big on 11x17 paper and cutting em out for a templet to follow.
I have a bunch of plywood around the new home that has been out in the yard for a few years by the looks of it. This is the base for the letters and the layout. Did the layout to follow the grain of the wood so when I comes time for sanding and paint and whatnot it will work nicely.

After all ruffed on the wood got out the trusty scroll saw and clamps and went to town.

I have to say the height of the work bench is spot on. I did not have to do as much deep bending over and that was great on the old back. Anyway.
after all cut out the real hand work begins by ruffing it up with a wood file and sandpaper.

laid down a few ruff and sloppy coats of red paint for effect and let me all dry over night.

final hand work with wood file and sand paper and it is starting to look like old barn wood. The file is great for adding texture. But the amazing part was adding a coat of dark wood stain over the whole thing and now we are talking...

Attached the letters with some tacks and wood glue to another long piece of wood that was worked over and "aged" as well, even added a bent nail for effect.

Let her dry and hung her this morning in the office.

Well, I hope your weekend was productive and that you are taking advantage of your free time to build something for yourself, be it for fun or monetary acquisition. Why not have a go with something you have never tried before? That is my favorite thing just going for it and making it up as you go along. Sometimes it works, some times is doesn't but you never know unless you roll up the sleeves and have a go. This time I lucked out and it worked for me on this surf sign thing....

Weekend Build: Work Bench

It has been a long while since the dust has been flying with a home project. Our current residence has been missing a work table in the garage so spent a couple bucks at the local hardware mega store and picked up some wood and screws. Ruff sketched some plans on a scrap piece of paper and went to town building an 8'(2.4m) long 2.5'(76.2 cm) wide 43"(109.22 cm) high work table. Shot a few pics throughout the build.

Of course no project would be complete with out some kind of R/Co. logo stencil action...

Well we are now heading towards the tail end of this here work week. Time to start making plans for the coming weekend....
Need to finish setting up the work space so can really roll up the sleeves and get to building things. Like more of those wallets folks have been asking for...

On The Road: Hong Kong

With my hire date of June 1st for the new 9-5 down in SoCal, I got a late start on the development of the first season. It is this reason that I am crazily trying to put together all the styles, fabrics, trims, fits, graphics and everything else involved with building a clothing line and I have basically crammed 3 or more months of development time into 5 weeks. Because of this situation I recently had the opportunity to go on a long voyage west of here, so far in fact that it became the 'Far East' and did it all alone. No boss. No development team. No one. Plus it was over the 4th of July holiday and who wants to spend time away for work over an extended weekend?....

While waiting for my air voiage to begin from LAX to Taipei, connecting to Hong Kong, I had some time to kill so I messed around with my phone camera. Here is the first of a few posts about my recent development trip to HK.

Class separation. The "haves" and the "have not so much."

I enjoyed having my own TV with digital controls to choose my own movie and entertainment. Came in handy when we sat on the runway for 2 1/2 hours because the above engine had a little trouble. 13 hour trip turned into a 15 1/2 hour trip....

From Taipei to Hong Kong I rode on the 747

The first leg of the trip was on a Boeing 777. The engine is huge...

Made it to Hong Kong on July 4th at 10am. Checked into the hotel took a short break then off I went to the HK office to do some introductions and meeting of the folks I will be working with and then started working.....

Made it through another full work week! As I was taking a brake from the 9-5 I decided to do a little cruzing around and check in on blogs and sites I have not visited for a while. I found a post done by my good buddy Mr.BDP that is spot on! So like any good blogger, I am re-posting it on my site for all to enjoy....

Inspiration: 1930's Japanese Wood Block Prints

Before I moved our family back south I really started to get into print making, even was set up to take a few classes at the local community art center. Funny how many things were available to the community up in the Evergreen state, in the Great Pacific Northwest, that I can not find here in SoCal. That is another story...
I am really interested in relief printing (block printing, lino cuts, etc.) Recently I stumbled upon a wonderful site that shares "100 Views of New Tokyo," 1928–1932, a subscription series by 8 Artists.
It is really quite a wonderful web page. I really like how detailed some of them are and how simplistic others are. Here are a few of my favorites.

I recently picked up a few really good books from Amazon that show techniques for print making / woodcuts / wood etching.

Japanese Woodblock Printing. Highly recommend this one if you like Japanese style woodcuts.

That is right we are back in SoCal!!!

Sorry for such a long absence away from posting anything. Since January of this the 2011 I have been in talks with folks that finally recived an offer for an amazing opportunity that, unfortunately, brings us come back to SoCal. I am in charge of starting a new apparel division for a big company that is part of an even bigger company. But it is totally an awesome thing because it is focused on an older demographic (my age) and is Heritage based with some tech mixed in. Right up my alley! It has now been about a month since my family and I packed up our home in 'The Great Pacific Northwest' and dragged ourselves down to 'Surf City, USA', our new home. So as I continue to get settled into our new Home, new job and new location my postings and build of goods my be few and far between. But with a new home comes a new garage and I am slowly, but surely, working to get the new workspace all set up and really would like to get back to building goods by the end of July, for sure!

So till then keep doing what you love and making things that you are stoked on....

Surfing, like most things these days, is followed by folks that are "doing their own thing"..... just like everybody else.... Well Mr. Brian Bent truly is doing his own thing!!! If you know anything about wave sliding then you know that a "kook box", or anything of the sort, is not something you see much of in museums let alone actually out in the waves being ridden.
A true example of going out finding what you love and just having a go with it for nothing else but personal stoke! Thanks to JJ for sharing with me about the gig with United 50. which reminds me, to see more of Mr.BB check out his little Sunday gathering, Hot Rod Church for Sinners.

Well it is that time of year again... Time for some new eye enhancing spectacles!
The good thing about eye insurance is every year that you have it means your are eligible to get some new specs, under a certain price range.
The down side to this process is most optometrist only carry the latest in high fashion trend driven spectacles. But for those of you you out there who, like me, are not into having wimpy light weight eye wear with big flashy logoing and whatnot there is a place that has been around since 1865 and they continue to make the same specs they have been making for ages. Shuron Ltd. I have posted about them in the past and have been rocking the "Revelation"

frames for a few years now. Well I am in the mood for a little addition to my repertoire of face enhancing accessories. Now I got my eye on the spectacular looking "Sidewinders",

not as a replacement but an addition!
These cats over at Shuron have got a great set up in that you can "try before you buy". They will send out as many frames as you would like and you get to try them on and send back the ones that you don't care for and keep the ones you like. I am sold.
Now if only the Revelation came with wider side pieces like the sidewinders, wouldn't that be something?......

Wow 2011!!!
It has been a very long time since any good posts form us here at REDCROW and for those of you that follow I do apologize for the lack of any good content over the past few months. I have been putting in the extra, extra long hours at the 9-5, more like the 9-9+...
The reason for lack of content is that #3 is well on her way so I have been focused on getting everything situated and worked out before she came... Early on Wed morning we welcomed into our lives a 6lb 15oz baby girl!
Please join us in welcoming Nola Hope into the world!

No matter what I build, nothing compares to the creation of life!.. So AMAZING!!! I am so humbled by the opportunity to be raising children and to have brought into this world a beautiful baby girl.

As things slowly get settled with #3 I plan to get back to filling in the goings on and whatever may come about with us here at REDCROW.

This past month has been so so so so so busy, and we are not talking Christmas shopping, the 9-5 has been going through more changes and reorganizing and restructuring and all the other "re's" that you can think of so it has been a lot of late nights at the office.
The most recent issue of Seattle Magazine featured one of our cotton plaid bow ties for boys by The Littlecrow Collection in their holiday children's spread. Just wanted to share.

It looks like there will not be a lot of updates for the rest of the year (so crazy that 2010 is almost over) but plan to really jump back into it in 2011, for sure.

Two weeks ago it was just a ruff week with long hours and silly deadlines. Last week it was filled with sickness and runny noses.
Blah....
This week is starting out looking to be another one of those endless ones....
The nice thing about being sick, if there is such a thing, is being able to just do nothing and it is ok. I am not a fan of the 'ol "boob-tube" but it was nice catching up with a few old programs that I have spent some time with in the past. But most of all it was nice catching up with the current RUGBY tour that is taking place. Rugby? oh yeah, the best team sport ever! But you don't have to take my word for it go on over to RugbyDump and gives yourself a little update'n with some nice "high lights". My boys have been super stoked as well, and every night before bed they have been asking for more "high lights"!

The other day we were able to watch the live game of New Zealand All Blacks face off against Scotland and just kill 'em over at espn3.com.

See not all runny noses and coughing....

A while back I had picked up an interesting photo book from the local Library and scanned a few amazing images, unfortunately I do not remember the title of the book or who it was that shot them but I wanted to share. When you get a moment click on each image to get a bigger size and better detail. You need to take a closer look and get inspired! What am I talking about? Well first off when growing up playing with the neighborhood kids we would play "cowboys & Indians" I would always be the Native. When I got into high school I still had a great interest in Native history and culture and would spend time building native crafts or going to Pow-wows in the summertime. But what is so awesome about these images? I just love the way that the Native Americans took the White mans apparel and made it their own. I do not glorify their situation, being that these photos were taken during the early days of the reservations, but I find such inspiration in their use of what they have received, ether by trade or by supply, and infused it into their established style.

Take a close look at the bead work on the man's blanket!!

TV Time!

I am not really a fan of television programing. I do not totally avoid it but usually when I get sucked in and it is finally turned off I feel like such a waste.... There is so much to do and build and create that TV just sucks away some valuable time with nothing to show afterwords. So for me to get really excited about some TV is not a regular occurrence..... Untail today! A while back I caught wind of some major television programing that had taken place across the "ditch" on BBC1.
SHERLOCK! Oh no not just another remake of the original stories set to film but an updated 21st century version of the detective and his crime solving adventures! The first episode premiered tonight in the United States on PBS Masterpiece Mystery and it was fantastic! I am a fan! I could go on about the writing, the acting, etc. etc. but why? Just watch the show if you get a chance or do what we all do now anyway and google it and find out all you want to know. Looking forward to next week for some more....

I have been skimming through a book I picked up from the ol' Library and came accross this story.....

My father wanted me to be a dentist instead. Well, I spent six years getting through NYU Dental School, hating every minute of it and wishing I owned my own art gallery instead. I wanted a career in art, not pulling teeth. but life plays nasty tricks. First came the Depression, so I drilled teeth to make a living. Then came the war and the Navy needed dentist. When I got back I had a wife and two kids to support, so I pushed aside my dreams of an art gallery and resumed my dental practice. When I hit 50 I figured it was time. My kids were on their own and I had money in the bank. My wife called it mid-life crisis and my kids thought I was insane to give up a lucrative dental practice to open an art gallery. So for the next 20 years I continued to push aside the idea of my own gallery and drilled more damned teeth. Well now I'm 73 years old and too ill to start an art gallery so I paint instead. You wonder what happens to all the years and all your dreams...."

R/Co. Archive: German Military Jacket.

I got my hands on this jacket and shot it, oh wow, must have been over 6 months ago... So I am a little slow on things sometimes.... Anyway I do not know much about it since it is ~~German~~ Swiss. A few things I know is that it was picked up in Germany at a surplus shop it is a heavy wool outer with twill pocketing and lining. Oh and that it is a really, really, awesome piece. Below I have provided a nice collection of images that I shot of all of the details. Enjoy.

Summer never really happened in the Great Pacific Northwest this year and along with that we never made a break as a family for a little time away. So we are heading south for a few days to spend some time along the Oregon shore with the whole extended family; Brother, Sister and her family, Mum & Dad, the whole lot. Super stoked since it has been a long while since we have all been together at the same time. Planing to do a little Cold Water slide'n sesh as well. Should be good.

At the beginning of summer built this graphic tee. All hand cut from stencils and hand sprayed to apply the ol' grafx.... Fun times.

A Change in Seasons

Caught my first glimpse of the changing leaves this past weekend. Autumn has to be one of the best times of year... well it is our favorite over here at REDCROW, that is for sure! A chill in the air. The changing leaves. The way the light is just different, softer almost. Love it! Not to mention being able to start wearing layers again. Though I don't think we really had much of a summer, weather wise, here in the Pacific Northwest. It was hot for like a week or two but that was about it. And I am not complaining....
Hope your week is turning out to be a good one, or that is will turn into a good one if not already.

R/Co. Project: Travel'n Trunk

Way back at the ending of spring we needed a way to do a nice presentation, something that could carry some of the goods in a somewhat easy manner.
I have had this old trunk since I was in junior high school. My mother had put fancy stuff inside it so she decided to line it with some kitschy country striped fabric.

Well that is not exactly the look that we are going for so it needed to be redone. I was in a time crunch so decided to just cover it with some tea dyed cotton sheeting that was laying around.

After that was all complete, with industrial staples and all, it needed a way to wheel it about with some ease. So gathered up some wood from the wood pile...

and built a platform.

can't do much without a way to move it so put on some wheels.

Needed something to be able to attach the base with wheels onto the trunk so I found some old rope up in the rafters of the garage and cut her loose.

Once all complete it packed up nicely and you just wheel her away...

Fun times....

Interestingly enough this shirt has a really good fit.

For some reason I have been super stoked on this shirt.

Not sure how to exactly pull it off for daily wear by not looking to "costume" like... I guess you just rock with confidence and that is that.

Not really sure where this shirt ended up, still unpacking boxes and trying to find things..... So back to it.

Wow Friday is almost upon us... again!
Sometimes time just fly's by. Throw in a short work week and it doubles in speed.

Last weekend the family and I, with some help from our friends, loaded up the trucks with everything we own and moved house. It went very well and we are super stoked to be in the new abode.
Moved the machines & sewing tools into the 'Shed' out back and am really excited to set up shop... But all good things are not always perfect, and this story is no different.
The other night I was out moving things around in the 'Shed' and trying to get it into a workable space so we can jump back into getting the projects that are still up in the air accomplished. That involves unpacking a few boxes and packing up others that are not needed any time soon. Get out the 'ol tape gun and go to town on a box, all the sudden "COULD YOU TRY AND KEEP IT DOWN! IT WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED!!!" (enter a forcefully shut window) Slam!

You know how when you get so into something the blinders kind of come on and you see nothing else? Well, that was me and the 'Shed'. I saw the shed and nothing else. Um, the house next door, well, it is really next door, like 2ft. away. With the window open and a crotchety old lady on the other side of that window! *Sigh* It would not be that big of a deal but most nights I am building goods well into the night not a good combo with an old koot trying to sleep! So, got to move the work shop back into the garage. It is not a bad thing, but I was so excited to build out the 'Shed'. Oh Well. At least still got space to muck about in, right?

The next day added more silliness to my already troubled day and I had to just mess around with my newly accuried color markers (see above) That was fun.

Update on the show.
Lost my 2nd look because kids are not allowed into the venue that is a 21 or older club. Not so bad but it is a week away! Not fun news! Oh well welcome to life, it never runs smooth, but what fun would that be, right. So just pick'n myself up and keep it going. Just working on my one look now.

R/Co. Project: Wood Block Printing

Time is fast approaching for the runway show so instead of packing snuck in a late night fabric printing test run with the compleated wood block.

The collection of goods that I am planning to send down the runway involves headwear that is built from a nice washed out navy canvas so I want the print to match back to that color. I do not have navy ink so did it the old fashioned way and just mix it up by hand.

Got out some fabric screen printing ink that I have been meaning to use, eye balled it and went for it. A little blue, a dollop of black, a touch of red, some more blue and a touch more black and.... looks good to me (for some reason color theory dose not click in my head but if I just mess with it for a bit it somehow works out)

The hardest part about block printing fabric is getting a nice transfer onto the fabric. Smaller blocks seam to do better but that is not what we are going for here so...

Laid out some ink onto a large plate glass and rolled the brayer through it and gave the block a nice good coat of ink.

After messing with it and doing a full run of fabric

it was not as defined as I had hoped, an idea that I must have read in some old library book a long time ago poped into the ol' noggin and reminded me that something needs to be damp. I do not remember if it is the news print under the cloth or the cloth it self... So grabed the spray bottle and gave a new section of cloth a nice sprits and slapped the screen down. Much better!

The final print is not as clean and defined as a screen print or a stencil, it is much more ruff and inconsistent. Love'n it! Can't wait to cut and sew the final piece and see how it looks. Well, more on that later.

If you have never tried block printing why not give it a go?!!!
you could even use a yam if you wanted...
